What we found
A cheap median, an expensive tail
The headline number in this dataset is the gap between the median and the mean. At $59.90, the median Dutch oven is an accessible piece of cookware — roughly the price of a mid-range skillet. But the average listing price of $87.39 sits about 46% above that median, which is the statistical signature of a long right tail: most listings are inexpensive, and a handful are not.
The full range runs from $27.52 to $439.99. That is a spread of more than 16x between the cheapest and most expensive Dutch oven in the sample — unusually wide for a product category defined by a single, fairly stable form factor (a heavy lidded pot).
| Price band | Listings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| $28–$131 | 87 | 87% |
| $131–$234 | 5 | 5% |
| $234–$337 | 6 | 6% |
| $337–$440 | 2 | 2% |
The distribution is heavily bottom-loaded. 87 of 100 priced listings fall in the lowest band. The three upper bands combined account for just 13 listings. Notably, the $131–$234 band (5 listings) is thinner than the $234–$337 band above it (6 listings) — a small hint that the market is bifurcated rather than continuous, with a mass-market cluster at the bottom and a premium cluster that skips the middle.
Brand share is fragmented — with one clear leader
Lodge accounts for 14% of listings (14 of 103), the largest single share in the sample. After that, concentration drops off sharply: five brands tie or near-tie in the 5–6% range.
| Brand label | Listings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Lodge | 14 | 14% |
| Enameled | 6 | 6% |
| Overmont | 6 | 6% |
| Le | 5 | 5% |
| EDGING | 5 | 5% |
| Umite | 5 | 5% |
A caveat on method: brand labels here are derived from the leading token of each listing title, which is why generic descriptors such as "Enameled" and truncated names such as "Le" appear alongside true brands. Taken at face value, the six most common labels together cover 41 of 103 listings — meaning roughly 60% of the category is spread across a long tail of smaller and unlisted sellers.
Ratings compress; review counts do not
The average rating across 102 rated listings is 4.66★. In practice, that means star ratings alone do very little work in separating one Dutch oven from another — nearly everything in the category is rated well.
Review volume tells a more differentiated story. The median listing has 780 reviews, while the sample as a whole represents 562,757 reviews. That total divided across 103 listings implies an average far above the median, so review counts — like prices — are concentrated in a relatively small number of high-visibility listings.
Finally, 16% of the listings captured were sponsored, a reminder that a meaningful slice of what a shopper sees on a Dutch oven search results page is paid placement rather than organic ranking.

Methodology
PrepDeck analyzed a sample of 103 current Amazon listings returned for the search term "dutch oven", collected and analyzed on 2026-10-11. Of those, 100 listings carried a visible price and 102 carried a star rating; percentages for price bands are calculated against the priced subset, and brand shares against all 103 listings.
Prices, ratings, review counts and sponsored flags are recorded as listed at the time of collection. Amazon pricing is dynamic and may have changed since. Brand attribution is derived from listing titles and may reflect descriptive words rather than manufacturer names. No products were physically tested, purchased, or inspected. This is an analysis of marketplace listing data only.
FAQ
What is a typical price for a Dutch oven? The median listing in our sample is $59.90. The average is $87.39, and 87% of priced listings fall between $28 and $131.
Why is the average so much higher than the median? A small number of premium listings — including one at $439.99 — pull the mean upward. Only 2% of listings fall in the $337–$440 band.
Are higher-priced Dutch ovens rated better? Our data does not support a strong signal either way. Ratings are tightly compressed, averaging 4.66★ across 102 rated listings, so star ratings separate products poorly in this category.
