What we found

The mean is not the market

The headline number for anyone shopping this category is $59.84 — the median listed price across 101 current Amazon Dutch oven listings. The average, $88.97, runs roughly 49% higher. That divergence is the single most useful fact in the dataset: it tells you the "typical" Dutch oven is a sub-$60 enameled cast iron pot, and that the arithmetic average is being dragged up by a small cluster of premium European-style pieces at the top of the range.

The price distribution confirms it. Four out of five listings (80 of 101, or 79%) cluster in the lowest band, $24 to $106. The remaining three bands split the last 21 listings almost evenly: 8 listings ($106–$187), 6 listings ($187–$269), and 7 listings ($269–$350).

Price band Listings Share
$24–$106 80 79%
$106–$187 8 8%
$187–$269 6 6%
$269–$350 7 7%
Total 101 100%

Practically, this is a two-tier market with a thin middle. There are abundant options under about $106 and a small premium shelf above $269, but comparatively few listings occupy the $106–$269 range — just 14 of 101 listings, or 14% combined.

Ratings are high — and barely vary

The average rating across the sample is 4.66 stars, computed over all 101 listings (every listing in the sample carried a rating). In a category where the cheapest item costs $24.28 and the dearest costs $349.93, that near-uniform rating average is notable: star ratings alone do very little work in separating a $25 pot from a $350 one. Buyers using ratings as a filter will find almost the entire field qualifies.

Review volume tells a different story. The sample carries 464,420 total reviews, but the median listing has just 582 — meaning a relatively small number of heavily-reviewed listings account for a large share of the total review mass. The gap between the median listing (582 reviews) and the aggregate (464,420 across 101 listings) is the clearest signal in the data that attention in this category is concentrated, even when price and rating are not.

Brand share is fragmented

Brand label Listings Share
Lodge 10 10%
Enameled 8 8%
Overmont 7 7%
Le 7 7%
Umite 3 3%
Amazon 3 3%

Lodge is the most frequent brand label at 10 listings (10%), followed by "Enameled" at 8 (8%), Overmont and "Le" at 7 each (7%), and Umite and Amazon at 3 each (3%). Note that brand labels here are derived from the leading token of each listing title, so generic descriptors such as "Enameled" appear alongside true brands. Even taking the top six labels together, they account for 38 of 101 listings — the majority of the category is a long tail of smaller sellers. Sponsored placements made up 16% of the listings captured.

Methodology

PrepDeck analyzed a sample of 101 current Amazon listings returned for the search term "dutch oven", captured and analyzed on 2026-10-04. All 101 listings carried both a price and a star rating, so price and rating statistics are computed on the full sample (n = 101).

Prices and ratings are recorded as listed at the time of capture and may change. Brand attribution is derived from listing titles and may include generic descriptors rather than registered brands. Price bands are equal-width intervals spanning the observed minimum ($24.28) to maximum ($349.93); percentages are rounded and may not sum to exactly 100.

No physical testing was performed. This is an analysis of marketplace listing data only — not a hands-on cookware review. Nothing here should be read as a durability, performance, or safety assessment.
